While I was in Iceland, I had a few different beers, and all of them were expensive!
As I mentioned in my previous post, one of the places I got some beers was a craft beer shop I had discovered.
The first beer that I drank was an imperial stout called Garún. At 11.5%, it really packed a punch, and I could feel the burn as I sipped it, which was as quick as I managed to drink it. This was also the infamous beer that cost 30€ for just one glass! While it was good, I was definitely not about to order a second one at that price.
The next beer that I got was a much more moderately priced Skúli red ale. I did like it, but for a “red ale,” I found it to be a little pale in color.
The last beer I got at the craft bar was an Úlfer double IPA. It was fruity and hoppy like one would expect an IPA to be with a mildly sweet undertone.
Those 3 beers already racked up quite the bill and I decided to stop after that. While the other 2 beers weren’t quite 30€ each, the total bill was still upward of 50€…
Since I was in Iceland for the EVE Fanfest, I also, of course, did some EVE related things including going to a bar near the CCP headquarters (the developers of EVE) where we got to sample some beers specifically brewed for the fanfest.
The first beer I had was a red ale called SAFETY OFF, which is a reference to turning off “safety” in the game so you can attack other players.
The beer itself was dark and malty with a mild bitterness on the back of the tongue. I thought it was the tastiest of the 3 beers we tried and even brought an empty bottle home as a souvenir.
The next beer we had was an API called HOP SUCCESS, which is a reference to the classic phrase of “ops (operations) success” one would occasionally state in chat if a planned event turned out well.
This beer was decent enough, but nothing remarkable. A pretty standard API in my opinion.
The last beer we had was a pilsner called NEED REPS, which is exactly what one would say if you needed “repairs,” i.e. healing.
This was by far our least favorite. It was pretty bland, which alone is bad enough, but it was also way too foamy. (I had to wait quite a while before the foam died down as seen in the pic.)
In general, the beers I had in Iceland were good, but super expensive. When we went out on the pub crawl, even cheap beers cost around 10 bucks each! I spent so much on alcohol that I had to be careful with my finances for a while afterwards. Enjoy, but just make sure you have the budget for it!
