Kelty Tornado 3800 ST Backpack Review

I used a backpack from my dad while I was in South America, and I figured I would like a backpack for myself. I found this at some second-hand store, and it was only used once, so it was still practically in perfect condition. It was regardless really cheap, so I bought it.

It has been a pretty good backpack. It is adjustable, holds a lot of stuff, has had nothing broken or ripped, and I still plan on using it for many years to come.

The big gripe I have about the backpack is the lack of pockets and resulting lack of possible organization. The other backpack I used in South America had a pocket on the back, where I could store things as well as a couple different pockets at the top instead of just one big pocket. A lot of backpacks also have little pockets on the waistband, but not this one.

This backpack only has the one big pocket and the smaller one on top. It can still store a lot, but it just entails throwing everything into either of the two pockets. When I put a lot of small, miscellaneous items in the top pocket, they can easily get shuffled around, and it sometimes takes a good minute to find what I’m looking for.

Otherwise, I can adjust it to perfectly fit me, and it can hold quite a bit of stuff. I have packed everything I needed to go backpacking for 10 days, food included, in this, and I still had room to spare. The lack of organization just means that I have to use other bags to organize things and then just pull out the bag I need, which isn’t too bad.

Pros:

Reliable

Adjustable

Can hold a lot

Cons:

Lack of pockets limits organization

Summary

It has been a very resilient backpack and has pulled through on many trips. I do wish there were more pockets for organization, but I just make do with multiple smaller bags that I can organize everything with. I will still use this for quite a while.

  1. I bought mine on clearance back in 2002. It’s still with me in 2021. It’s held everything from tents, food, clothes, personal care items to chainsaws. I use it ten times a year and clean it every so often. It’s nice just to have something with lots of memories from my college years to creating new ones. I should have a better back pack, but I just never had an extra 100-200 when this is fine. I do have a bike messenger bag for cycling.,

    • Definitely! I have had mine for over 10 years now. I sometimes consider getting a new one with some side pockets for better organization, but this one is still kicking and has lots more life in it.
